For the third year, we have become a stopping place for Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds who are heading south for the winter. They chirp and buzz around the feeders. Usually, the hummers are territorial and will not let other hummers feed, but the sheer volume of birds overwhelms any attempts to claim a feeder. We now have 7 feeders up: 2 in front, one on the side and 4 in back. They need to be refilled every other day, and sometimes every day.
Two additional visitors showed up last week: a juvenile male and a female Baltimore oriole. They are also heading south. Their food of choice is fruit and have thoroughly enjoyed the oranges we put out every morning.
